Postcard Nazareth Israel Market Scene Chrome 1960s Holy Land Palphot

Nazareth, Israel1969ChromeGood

Two Arab women stride confidently through the ancient souk of Nazareth, balancing stacked aluminum pots and a cardboard shipping crate on their heads with practiced ease — behind them rises the old Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, its bell tower presiding over a marketplace that has hummed with commerce for two millennia. This vivid chrome-era color card, published by Palphot Ltd. under their "Holy Land Greetings" imprint, captures the medieval character the town retained well into the 1960s: narrow, canvas-shaded lanes lined with vendors selling plasticware, cookware, and sundries cheek-by-jowl. The sender, signing as Amy and Alice, mailed it from Ramat Gan on July 19 (year partially legible, c. 1969) to William and a recipient in Villa Park, Illinois, filling every inch of the back with breathless notes about visiting the Venerated Franciscan Church of the Annunciation — built where Mary received Angel Gabriel — and the Church of St. Joseph, erected over Joseph's carpenter shop. "Learning much of Bible history. Tremendous experience," they concluded.
