Antique & Vintage Postcards

A hand-tinted nocturnal marvel, this early 1900s view plunges the viewer directly into the iron lattice canopy of the Willemsbrug in Rotterdam — gas lamps blazing at the entrance tower, a bowler-hatted cyclist pedaling straight toward the lens, and clusters of dark-coated pedestrians receding into a vanishing point of criss-crossed steel. The Willemsbrug (William Bridge), completed in 1878, was Rotterdam's grand iron railway and road bridge spanning the Nieuwe Maas; it stood until demolition in 1934 and was replaced by a modern structure. This colorized view, published by the prestigious Dr. Trenkler Co. of Leipzig (catalog no. 20855), captures the bridge at peak civic pride, with the royal monogram medallion visible on the right pylon — a reference to the Dutch royal house. The undivided back (address-only reverse, pre-1907) and Dutch postal format — Briefkaart / Algemeene Postvereeniging — date the card to approximately 1900–1905. Never mailed; the address side is entirely blank, preserving crisp color on the front.
