Postcard 1900 Jerusalem Omar Mosque Dome Rock Palestine Stengel Undivided Back

Jerusalem, Ottoman Palestine1900Pre-linenExcellent

Haunting in its silver-grey tones, this undivided-back card from the very dawn of picture-postcard collecting presents the Dome of the Rock — misidentified in the period caption as the "Omar-Moschee / Mosquée d'Omar," a common 19th-century European conflation — rising behind the ancient walls of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, with a slender Ottoman minaret piercing the sky to the right. Published by the celebrated Stengel & Co. of Dresden and Berlin (catalog no. 1272), this card was printed when Jerusalem was still firmly within the Ottoman Empire, lending it exceptional historical weight as a document of the pre-British-Mandate Holy City. The back carries the Ottoman postal authority designation — Union Postale Universelle / Turquie / Carte Postale — in French, Ottoman Arabic script, and ornate red printing, confirming use within the Ottoman postal system. A side-margin printer's note reads "R. Bailes, 65 King's Road, Brighton," suggesting a British retail distributor. The card is unused, with a clean undivided back in excellent condition.
