Antique & Vintage Postcards

Warm candlelight seems to radiate from this chrome-era color photograph of the ornate entrance to the Holy Manger at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem — gilded iconostasis, hanging oil lamps in jewel colors, and ancient stone columns framing the descent to Christendom's most venerated grotto. Sent from Tel Aviv on October 2, 1974, the card carries a breezy note from travelers Blanche and Chas to friends in Lisle, Illinois: "Left Jerusalem yesterday — Good trip!" — a postcard perfectly capturing the casual intimacy of 1970s Holy Land tourism. The card was published by Palphot, Israel's dominant postcard publisher of the era. Two Israeli definitive stamps frank the card: a 0.50 IL green "Rosh Pinna" landscape stamp and a 0.30 IL red "En Avedat" stamp from the Israeli Landscapes series (issued 1971–1975), both tied by a Gan HaSharon (Tel Aviv district) circular date stamp reading 2.10.74.
