Postcard 1910 North Leominster MA Moonlight Nashua River Leighton

North Leominster, Massachusetts, USA1910Pre-linenFair-Good

A full moon breaks through dramatic storm clouds to cast shimmering silver light across the quiet Nashua River at North Leominster, Massachusetts — this moody nocturnal scene from 1910 is the kind of romantic hand-colored card that made Hugh C. Leighton of Portland, Maine, one of America's most respected early postcard publishers. Dark silhouetted trees frame both banks, their reflections dissolving in the moonlit current below, evoking a dreamlike stillness that was enormously popular with Edwardian-era correspondents. The card was mailed on August 25, 1910, from Leominster, and addressed to a "Mrs. J. A. Nutter" at 25 Tufts St., Worcester, Mass., care of L. Walker. The charming handwritten message from "Minnie" mentions chocolates, neck bands, Mary's sewing needs, and a playful note about Allie's restless Monday night — a vivid domestic vignette from a century past.
