Tucked into a dense New England forest canopy above Route 2 in Millers Falls, Massachusetts, the French King Motel curves in an elegant arc of eighteen units around a manicured lawn — its semicircular layout, clearly designed to be admired from the air, signals the confident modernism of early-1960s motor-court architecture along the Mohawk Trail corridor. This aerial chrome view, photographed by Mike Roberts of Berkeley, California — one of the era's premier travel postcard photographers — was annotated by its owner: "Aug 27–28 1960," a precise record of a two-night stopover. The motel boasted AAA approval, Quality Courts membership, RCA televisions in every room, a coffee shop, and a dining room; owners Mr. and Mrs. Prondecki managed the property seasonally from May through October. The French King Bridge nearby spans the Connecticut River at one of its most dramatic gorge sections, and the Mohawk Trail itself was one of America's first designated scenic byways.
