The ornate terracotta-and-brick corner pub with its distinctive dome rises in the middle distance, flanked by canopied shopfronts whose awnings shelter goods long since vanished, and the overhead tramway wires criss-cross the sky in a cat's cradle of industrial progress. A second, earlier-looking sepia panel on the reverse side of the booklet or pairing shows the same scene from a slightly different angle, with the Eccles town buildings more prominent and horse traffic dominant — placing that view perhaps a decade earlier, around 1905.
