Antique & Vintage Postcards

A slice of early American motoring life: two open-topped touring cars — probably mid-1920s Fords — pull up alongside the hand-crank gravity-feed gas pumps at "Duds," a cheerful red-roofed roadside stop on the Jacobs Ladder Trail beside Green Water Pond in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. The linen-era hand-tinted postcard captures the romance of the nascent automobile age, when scenic mountain roads like the Jacobs Ladder (today's Route 20) were being promoted as leisure driving destinations. The back notes "DUDS is a good place for lunch, souvenirs, gas and oil — Mrs. C. H. Hastings, Lee, Mass." — a proprietress proudly advertising her venture to passing motorists. Published by Chas. W. Hughes of Mechanicville, NY, a regional publisher active in New England tourist cards. The unused card shows vibrant original color with crisp printing; an honest snapshot of roadside commerce in the Jazz Age.
