Antique & Vintage Postcards

Mist-softened onion domes and Kremlin-esque towers rise above the Trocadéro pools in this ghostly nocturne from the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle — one of the most celebrated World's Fairs in history, which drew over 50 million visitors and introduced the world to the Grand Palais, Petit Palais, and the Gare de Lyon. The "L'Asie Russe" pavilion depicted here evoked the vast Russian imperial territories of Central Asia, its exotic silhouette reflected in the ornamental basins. Sent in September 1900 — while the fair was still open — to a Mademoiselle named Rosa in Vienna, this card is a direct artifact of fin-de-siècle wonder, postmarked Paris and delivered through two Wien district post offices within days.
