Postcard 1905 Dubrovnik Ragusa Onofrio Fountain S. Salvatore Church

Dubrovnik (Ragusa), Croatia (then Austria-Hungary)1905Pre-linenGood

A woman in traditional Dalmatian dress draws water from the magnificent 15th-century Onofrio Fountain in Dubrovnik — then still known by its Venetian name Ragusa — as the Renaissance façade of the Church of San Salvatore rises serenely behind her, its rose window glowing in the Adriatic light. The large domed fountain, designed by the Neapolitan architect Onofrio di Giordano della Cava around 1438, was the terminus of the city's aqueduct system and remained a living part of daily life well into the 20th century. A handwritten note on the reverse, in English, identifies the subjects with scholarly precision, noting that Onofrio was "architect of Rector's palace 1388" and that San Salvatore was a "votive church commemorating earthquake of 1520."
