Antique & Vintage Postcards

A period tram glides through the archway of the magnificent Gothic Powder Tower — Prašná brána — as an early automobile and pedestrians animate the foreground of this razor-sharp real-photo postcard of interwar Prague, one of Europe's most architecturally splendid capitals. The tower, begun in 1475 under King Vladislaus II as a ceremonial gateway to the Old Town, anchors the composition with its bristling Late Gothic pinnacles and heraldic sculptural program, still newly restored after 19th-century neo-Gothic renovation. The RPPC format and the presence of 1930s-era trams and the rounded Modernist commercial building at left place this card squarely in the brief golden age of Czechoslovak democracy between the wars.
