Antique & Vintage Postcards

Stillness radiates from this early real-photo-style postcard of the Klosterhof — the cloister courtyard — of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, one of Europe's great repositories of Germanic art and cultural history. A weathered stone well with its wooden draw-frame anchors the left foreground, while the rounded apse of the medieval church beyond rises in Romanesque solidity, its lancet windows catching pale Bavarian light. The card bears a handwritten caption in period script: "German Museum. Klosterhof." The museum, founded in 1852, incorporated the fabric of a 14th-century Carthusian monastery, and this courtyard — virtually unchanged for centuries — was a favorite subject for early postcard photographers. Published by Kunst- u. Vorbilderverlag Christof Müller, Nürnberg, this unused card was never addressed or sent, preserving it in crisp, collectible condition.
