Postcard 1935 Düsseldorf Rheinhalle Planetarium Ehrenhof Germany RPPC

Düsseldorf, Germany1935RPPCFair-Good

Monumental modernism on the Rhine — this striking 1935 real-photo postcard presents Düsseldorf's Rheinhalle (then serving as a planetarium) and its sweeping Ehrenhof garden approach, designed by architect Professor Wilhelm Kreis and built for the 1926 GeSoLei exhibition. The domed copper-roofed rotunda anchors the far end of a long formal promenade flanked by manicured hedges, topiary, lampposts, and stone balustrades; dozens of well-dressed visitors stroll the axial path in the afternoon light — a picture of Weimar-era civic pride on the cusp of Nazi transformation. The card was posted 26 May 1935 from Düsseldorf to Familie Karl L. in Wiesbaden, Zitelmannstr. 12 II. The sender — whose message opens warmly — writes they are roaming every corner of the city and will have much to tell; the card is dated 25.5.35 in the message. Published by Kunstverlag August Gunkel of Düsseldorf; photography by Rolf Kellner, Karlsruhe.
