Two hapless travelers — a woman in a smart green coat and a red-haired man in a brown suit — tumble down the station steps in a burst of comic chaos, roses flying, suitcase skidding, cane and spectacles clattering across the platform, as a locomotive steams away in the background: "Wir sind soeben glücklich in Berlin angekommen" — "We have just happily arrived in Berlin." The irony is delicious. Hidden inside the back flap of this German novelty card is a compact accordion-fold strip of miniature Berlin views including the Ehrenmal (war memorial), what appears to be the Bismarckdenkmal and Siegessäule (Victory Column), and several additional city landmarks. The comic illustration style and graphic design are consistent with German postcard production of the 1930s, a period when Berlin was simultaneously a cosmopolitan world capital and a city on the cusp of catastrophic political transformation. The suitcase in the foreground is decorated with travel stickers — a nice period detail evoking the era of grand rail journeys and hotel labels. Interior miniature views are intact within their small cardboard box enclosure.
