Postcard 1919 Dortmund Synagogue Hiltropwall Germany WWI Amsterdam Transit

Dortmund, Germany1919Pre-linenFair

A poignant relic of a vanished world — this circa-1919 postcard shows the magnificent Dortmund Synagogue on Hiltropwall, a grand Moorish-Romanesque domed structure completed in 1900 that would be destroyed by the Nazis during Kristallnacht on 9 November 1938. The bird's-eye view captures the ornate copper-domed roof with its decorative arches and rose windows, set amid tree-lined streets with a period tram running the length of Hiltropwall past elegant bourgeois villas. The card was posted in the immediate aftermath of World War I, routed through Amsterdam (postmarked Amsterdam 12.V.1919 and Emmerich transit), and addressed to Johann at Deymanstr. 90 II, Amsterdam, Holland. The reverse carries a dense handwritten message in German Kurrent script. The Amsterdam routing via Emmerich suggests a German sender writing to a Dutch-resident German contact — a common pattern in early Weimar civilian reintegration correspondence. The stamp appears to have been removed, leaving a characteristic rectangular ghost, but the triple transit cancels are historically significant.
