The image captures the medieval grandeur of Lübeck's Gothic Rathaus with its distinctive blind arcade screen wall and pierced parapet, punctuated by slender turrets, while the ornate neo-Gothic market fountain dominates the foreground. Horse-drawn carts and early pedestrians animate the square, giving this Weimar-era snapshot rare street-life texture. Lübeck's Marktplatz, a UNESCO World Heritage precinct since 1987, was one of the great mercantile centers of Northern Europe; this card predates the city's wartime damage and preserves it intact. The reverse bears dense German cursive in old Kurrent script, postmarked Kiel 21.7.26, and bears a crisp Deutsches Reich 5 Pfennig green Reichsadler (Eagle) definitive stamp.
