Antique & Vintage Postcards

Dust hangs in the dry Afghan air as camel traders stand confidently among their animals at the Nakhās (livestock market) of Ghazni — a vivid color chrome postcard that transports the viewer to one of Central Asia's most ancient trading crossroads. The men wear traditional shalwar kameez and turbans; one holds a leading rope, another a staff, as dromedary camels mill around them, their woolly coats and expressive faces filling the frame. Ghazni, a city with roots stretching back to the Ghaznavid Empire of the 11th century and a key stop on historic Silk Road routes, still hosted these traditional livestock markets well into the late 20th century. Published by Nasrullah Sadiqui of the Nekzad Market, Kabul, and printed by Krüger (Germany), this unused card captures a moment of everyday Afghan commercial life that has since been dramatically disrupted by decades of conflict.
