Antique & Vintage Postcards

A rotund, bug-eyed dandy in a morning coat and top hat twists himself into a comic contortion, straining to peer around his own enormous belly at his shoes — the caption asking with deadpan wit, "I wonder if I need a shine?" This exuberantly drawn Edwardian humor card captures the era's fondness for gentle corpulence comedy, rendered in bright chromolithographic color with the rotund gentleman's striped waistcoat, walking cane, and brown gloves adding period-perfect detail. The image is sharp and unfaded, printed on quality card stock typical of the pre-WWI American humor postcard boom. The reverse is unused, clean and bright, with the publisher's copyright notice — Comics Series No. 16, Copyrighted 1910 by J.J. Marks, N.Y. — printed in the lower left margin alongside a Pennsylvania Railroad–style keystone "B" logo, and the standard stamp box noting domestic and international rates (1¢ domestic, 2¢ foreign).
