Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bathed in the warm sepia tones of an albumen print, the grand Italianate Château de Rothschild at Pregny rises commandingly above a sweeping lawn, a lone top-hatted figure standing in the foreground to give scale to the palatial façade — one of the most storied private estates in nineteenth-century Europe, built for Baron Adolphe de Rothschild overlooking Lake Geneva. The photograph captures the château's ornate three-story elevation with its oval windows, decorative balustrades, and rounded corner bays in exquisite detail, the bare winter trees flanking the structure suggesting a late-season sitting circa 1870–1880. This is a carte-de-visite (CDV) format albumen photograph — not a postcard proper, but a collectible photographic card of the same era — bearing on the reverse the elegant pink-ink printed stamp of Garcin Photographe, Genève, with the banner reading Suisse et Savoie par Garcin Photographe Genève. The image is numbered No. 67 in the photographer's series of Swiss and Savoyard views. Condition is very good for age: slight toning to the sky area, image sharp and fully intact.
