Postcard 1950s Parliament Buildings Victoria BC Canada RPPC Gowen Sutton

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada1952RPPCExcellent

Victoria's grandest landmark glows with the verdigris of its copper domes in this hand-tinted real-photo postcard — the British Columbia Parliament Buildings, designed by Francis Rattenbury and opened in 1898, rise imperiously above manicured lawns where a cenotaph and flagpole stand at quiet attention on a clear summer's day. The tinting is restrained and naturalistic: pale green-blue on the copper roofing, warm buff on the stone façade, a vivid stripe of red from what appears to be parked automobiles along the lower right, all hallmarks of the Gowen Sutton Co. style that made Vancouver's premier postcard house a fixture in mid-century British Columbia tourism. The reverse is crisp and entirely unused, printed in the classic Gowen Sutton format with "Made in Canada" at the top — a detail that pleases Commonwealth postal history collectors as much as it does BC topographic enthusiasts.
