CDV 1860s Naples Street Scene Georges Sommer Cabinet Card Italy Photo

Naples, Italy1868Pre-linenFair-Good

Horse-drawn carriages jostle for position in a sun-bleached Neapolitan piazza, pedestrians in mid-Victorian dress weaving between the equipages as a baroque church façade — almost certainly Sant'Anna dei Lombardi or a near neighbor — dominates the right edge of the frame: this is Naples at the peak of the Risorgimento era, caught with remarkable clarity by Georges Sommer, the Frankfurt-born photographer who became the most celebrated commercial cameraman in southern Italy. Sommer's albumen print, mounted on the standard carte-de-visite card, rewards close inspection — a detail enlargement (_02) reveals hawkers, a horse-drawn omnibus, and the layered stucco balconies of the surrounding palazzi in fine resolution. The reverse (_03) carries Sommer's ornate purple imprint, listing his two Naples addresses (Atelier Monte di Dio No. 4 and Magasin Sta. Caterina No. 5) and four "Grandes Médailles d'Or" medallions — awards from Napoleon III, Vittorio Emanuele II, and the King of Württemberg — that he earned between 1859 and the mid-1860s, helping date this card to approximately 1865–1872.
