Antique & Vintage Postcards

Young trees line the grand promenading boulevard of Vienna's Kolowrat-Ring in this rare albumen cabinet card from the 1870s — a city boulevard so freshly built that the saplings have barely found their footing, captured by A.F. Czihak from his prestigious publishing house at Graben 21, Vienna's most fashionable commercial street. The photograph documents the Ringstrasse era at its earliest and most aspirational: rows of newly completed Historicist apartment palaces recede toward a distant dome, the geometry of the new boulevard interrupted only by a lone seated figure on a bench. Czihak operated a major depot for photography and stereoscopy in Vienna, producing numbered souvenir views for the Grand Tour market in German, French, and English — a cosmopolitan ambition visible in the trilingual back-stamp. This is card No. 102 in his Wien series.
