Vienna's most theatrical Baroque church fills the frame in this CDV-format albumen photograph — the Karlskirche, or St. Charles Borromeo, its great elliptical copper dome flanked by twin freestanding columns modeled on Trajan's Column in Rome, a commission by Emperor Charles VI completed by Johann Fischer von Erlach in 1737. The image, numbered 8 in the A.F. Czihak series, was published from the firm's address at Graben 21, Vienna — one of the city's most prestigious commercial addresses — and sold as part of a systematic photographic catalogue of Viennese monuments issued in the 1860s–1870s. A low iron fence runs across the foreground, and a lone white-clad figure stands at the portico entrance, providing an almost accidental sense of scale against the soaring pediment. The card back is printed in red ink in German, French, and English, reflecting Czihak's savvy marketing to an international tourist trade. The mount has the characteristic cream-yellow tint of period albumen prints on thick card stock.
