Antique & Vintage Postcards

A vintage yellow automobile noses through the dark, cathedral-like tunnel carved through the base of the mighty Coolidge Tree — one of the most photographed drive-through redwoods on California's famed Redwood Highway — in this richly colored linen-era card that perfectly captures the golden age of American road tourism. Named for Col. John Coolidge (father of President Calvin Coolidge), the tree stood in Coolidge Redwood Park in Humboldt County and drew thousands of motorists annually along the famous Redwood Highway, as the back text proudly proclaims. Postmarked Oakland, California on July 1, 1930 aboard a transcontinental railway mail car (Tour 2, Trans. Cal.), the card was sent from a traveler identified only by initials "R.Z.H." to a Jack at 1671 Madison St. N.W., Washington, D.C. — an address in the LeDroit Park neighborhood — carrying nothing but the sender's initials, leaving the imagination to fill in the story of a cross-country road and rail adventure. Published by Curt Teich of Chicago, the card is a quality C.T. Photo Colorit linen production.
