Postcard 1911 Call Building San Francisco CA Oakland Postmark Mamie

San Francisco, California, USA1911Pre-linenFair-Good

Rising triumphantly from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake and fire, the ornate Beaux-Arts Call Building dominates Market Street in this vivid chromolithographic view — cable cars threading below, pedestrians bustling at its colonnaded base, and an American flag snapping from its gilded dome against a cobalt California sky. Written from Oakland on September 18, 1911, a correspondent named "Mamie" sent this card to a friend in Cambridge, Massachusetts, marveling at San Francisco's resurrection: "It is built up solid — the stores remind me of Boston as there are so many of them." She had just come down from the Santa Cruz mountains and received her friend's card in San Francisco, a vivid reminder of how quickly the city had reinvented itself just five years after catastrophe. The postmark — Oakland, Cal., Sep 16 [or 18] PM, 1911 — and a 1¢ Franklin green stamp complete this evocative survivor's dispatch.
