Antique & Vintage Postcards

Water detonates from the base of a colossal concrete arc in this stunning real-photo postcard of Boulder Dam — now Hoover Dam — captured from the downstream gorge in a perspective that makes the Black Canyon walls loom like cathedral buttresses on either side. The Nevada-Arizona border landmark was the engineering marvel of the 1930s New Deal era, drawing a million visitors a year even during construction, and Frashers, Inc. of Pomona, California was the preeminent commercial publisher of Western American scenic photographs of the period, producing sharply detailed silver-gelatin RPPCs sold at park concessions and roadside stands. Tiny period vehicles and construction equipment are visible on the canyon floor, offering a rare human scale against the 726-foot dam face. The back is printed "Published by Frashers, Inc., Pomona, Calif." and carries a penciled price "5–" in the corner, suggesting a dealer's inventory mark.
