Antique & Vintage Postcards

Standing proud against a Nevada sky full of dramatic clouds, St. Mary's in the Mountains Catholic Church in Virginia City commands this striking real photo postcard with the authority of a landmark that has already survived fire and reinvention. The hand-lettered caption in the photo itself tells the story: "Built 1860 — Burned 1875 — Rebuilt 1876," a compressed saga of the Comstock Lode boomtown's volatile fortunes. The Gothic Revival brick church with its soaring white-trimmed spire, lancet arches, and rose window was the spiritual center of one of the West's most famous silver-mining communities — the very town that launched Mark Twain's career. This crisp RPPC (real photo postcard) captures the church in excellent photographic detail, likely shot in the 1940s–50s, and was priced at $2.50 for retail sale but never posted.
