Postcard c1905 Dalton MA Senator Crane Home Phostint Detroit Publishing Co

Dalton, Massachusetts, USA1905Pre-linenGood

Rolling Berkshire hills, a sparkling millstream, and the unmistakable red-brick manor of one of America's most powerful paper dynasties — this luminous Phostint color view of Dalton, Massachusetts captures the estate of Senator Winthrop Murray Crane, whose family mill supplied the paper for every piece of U.S. currency in circulation at the time. Printed by the legendary Detroit Publishing Company using their proprietary Phostint photochrom process, the card glows with the saturated greens and pinks that made Detroit Publishing the gold standard of Edwardian American postcards. The caption at top reads: "The Home of Senator Crane and Where He Manufactures Paper for U.S. Money" — an extraordinary claim stamped right onto a souvenir card. The reverse is unused and pristine, bearing the classic red Detroit Publishing layout with the "Phostint" trademark. Senator Crane later became Governor of Massachusetts and a U.S. Senator; his Crane & Co. paper mill in Dalton still supplies the Bureau of Engraving today.
