Dappled sunlight filters through mature New England maples to illuminate the imposing Romanesque Revival façade of the Methodist Church in Dalton, Massachusetts—a small Berkshire County mill town best known as home to Crane & Co., the paper manufacturer that has supplied the U.S. government with currency paper since 1879. The church's bold circular rose window, its rusticated granite base, and the square central tower give it an authority that belies the modest scale of the community around it. This hand-colored view was published by Geo. M. Daly of Irving House, Dalton—a local stationer and innkeeper who commissioned the Albertype Company of Brooklyn, New York, to produce what the back proudly calls "The Finest American Made View Post Cards." The Albertype process, a collotype-based technique, delivered exceptionally fine tonal gradation, and the skilled hand-colorists who tinted these cards brought the stained glass of the rose window to warm amber and green life. Small-town New England church cards from local publishers are enduringly popular with Massachusetts topographical collectors.
