Antique & Vintage Postcards

Frothy white cascades tumble over broad pink granite ledges deep in the Berkshire woodland — this hand-colored view of Waconah Falls near Dalton, Massachusetts is a jewel of the Edwardian nature postcard tradition. The falls, named for a Mohican legend, drop roughly 40 feet over ancient metamorphic rock and remained a beloved tourist destination throughout the early 1900s. Published by the H. C. Leighton Company of Portland, Maine and printed in Germany — as was standard for the finest American view cards of the era — the card's rich teal and amber tones were achieved through a sophisticated chromolithographic process unavailable in domestic print shops at the time. The reverse is entirely unused, with the publisher's Gothic script and the note "Made in Germany" confirming its pre-WWI origins. A beautiful, clean example of an always-popular New England waterfall subject.
