Postcard Versailles Grand Trianon Napoleon Bedroom Handcolored France c1905

Versailles, France1905Pre-linenFair-Good

Rich Empire-style fabrics drape a mahogany lit-en-bateau — Napoleon I's own campaign bed, preserved exactly as it stood at the Grand Trianon in Versailles — while a marble bust gazes imperiously from a console table nearby, the whole scene captured in glowing hand-applied color that makes the room feel almost alive. The Grand Trianon, Louis XIV's pink marble retreat, became Napoleon's preferred residence at Versailles after he ordered its refurnishment in the early nineteenth century; his bedroom here, with its distinctive patterned wallpaper and gilded furniture, remains one of the most intimate Napoleonic interiors in France. Publisher Mme. Moreau of Versailles issued this early divided-back carte postale, likely before 1907, making it a genuine Edwardian-era artifact of French heritage tourism.
