Postcard 1900s Chateau Malmaison Napoleon Library France L'Abeille Paris

Rueil-Malmaison, France1910Pre-linenGood

Inside the Château de la Malmaison — Napoleon's beloved retreat west of Paris where he spent some of his happiest years with Joséphine — this evocative pre-WWI postcard reveals the Emperor's library in hushed grandeur: paired marble busts flank the entrance, Corinthian columns frame a barrel-vaulted ceiling painted with classical figures, and a lone writing desk sits beneath an arched window draped in Empire-style curtains, just as Napoleon left it. Published by L'Abeille (The Bee) of Paris, one of France's leading early postcard publishers, this card from the "divided back" era (post-1903) carries the bilingual caption in both French and English — "La Bibliothèque de l'Empereur Napoléon Ier / The Book-Case of the Emperor Napoleon 1st" — suggesting it was produced for both French and international tourist markets. The unused, undivided-feeling back with French "Correspondance / Adresse" layout and the L'Abeille Paris printer's mark makes this a clean example of Edwardian-era French topographical publishing at its finest.
