Postcard Napoleon I Throne Chateau Malmaison Rueil France c1905 ND Phot

Rueil-Malmaison, France1905Pre-linenExcellent

Napoleon's circular throne dominates this haunting silver-gelatin view — the great "N" monogram embroidered on its medallion backrest still radiates imperial authority more than a century after Josephine last walked these halls at the Château de la Malmaison, Rueil. The elaborately carved ebonized frame, ball-finial armrests, and richly fringed cushion are captured with crisp photographic detail by the prestigious Neurdein Frères studio, whose "ND Phot." imprint was synonymous with quality French documentary photography in the Belle Époque. This throne chair — one of the most evocative surviving objects of the First Empire — sat in the private residence Napoleon shared with Josephine before their divorce, and it remains at Malmaison today. The reverse carries the classic multilingual undivided-style international back ("Post Card / Carte Postale / Postkarte / Briefkaart…"), unused and clean.
