Postcard Sassenage Caves Entry Interior View Grenoble France c1905 Gaude

Sassenage, Isère, France1906Pre-linenExcellent

A lone silhouetted figure perches on a boulder at the threshold of the Cuves de Sassenage, gazing out toward the sun-drenched forest beyond — one of the most atmospheric cave-entrance photographs to emerge from the Dauphiné region near Grenoble in the early twentieth century. The stepped stone path descends into deep shadow while the cave mouth blazes with natural light, creating a dramatic chiaroscuro effect that the photographer P. Gaude of Grenoble has exploited masterfully. The Cuves de Sassenage, a celebrated natural grotto associated in local legend with the fairy Mélusine, were a popular excursion destination for tourists arriving by the new mountain railways. The reverse bears the publisher's credit — "P. GAUDE, phot.-édit. — Grenoble" — with the printer's oval cartouche of A. Gouttagno, Lyon, confirming a c.1903–1908 production date. Unused and in excellent condition.
