Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sun-seekers sprawl and splash along Nice's legendary pebble beach in the glorious summer of 1951, the grand Belle Époque façades of the Promenade des Anglais — including what appears to be the Palais de la Méditerranée — rising behind an iron railing thick with parked bicycles, while bathers in period swimwear laze in the Mediterranean light that has drawn visitors to the Côte d'Azur for centuries. Published by Éditions Les Ibis as card no. 143 ("Nice — La Plage, l'heure du bain"), this real black-and-white photo card was posted on 22 July 1951 by someone named Poldi, who scrawled "Eine wundervolle Reise! Herzliche Grüße" (A wonderful trip! Warm greetings) in blue ink and pressed a circular purple travel-agency stamp — "Reisebüro Preisgekrönt" — onto the correspondence side before sending it to Anton and Gertrude in Markesdorf, Austria.
