Antique & Vintage Postcards

Dated precisely February 15, 1941 in the photographer's own hand, this stunning real-photo postcard captures the upstream face of Grand Coulee Dam looking west during the final, frenetic phase of its construction — one of the most audacious engineering projects in American history and the centerpiece of FDR's New Deal public works program. The massive concrete monoliths of the dam's upstream face march across the frame in geometric precision while a lone dragline crane stands in silhouette against the Columbia River's glassy surface, a tiny mechanical figure dwarfed by the colossus rising behind it. Grand Coulee Dam was completed in 1942 and remains to this day the largest hydroelectric facility in the United States. The photo number "0251" and date "2-15-41" are written directly on the image, consistent with official Bureau of Reclamation or contractor construction documentation photographs that were sometimes printed in postcard format for sale at the dam site. The reverse was mailed to California with a 1¢ green US stamp, though much of the address has been obscured by tape removal damage.
