Postcard Chrome Templo La Purisima Monterrey Mexico 1968 Used Airmail Stamp

Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico1968ChromeFair-Good

Suzanne was touring Mexico with two work friends in November 1968 — Mayan ruins at Uxmal and Chichén Itzá behind them, Monterrey now, Mexico City and Acapulco ahead — and she chose this bold chrome postcard of the Templo de la Purísima to send to her friend Dee in Flushing, New York. The modernist church, designed by architect Enrique de la Mora and completed in 1946, is a landmark of mid-century Mexican architecture: its dramatic parabolic concrete vaults sweep low over the nave like an upturned ship's hull, anchored by a stark volcanic-stone campanile and framed by gleaming 1950s American automobiles — a red Chevy and a yellow Bel Air — parked casually at the curb. The message captures a golden era of American leisure travel to Mexico, with a mention of the Geological Society of America's annual meetings. The card is franked with an 80-centavo Mexican airmail stamp and postmarked Monterrey, 8 November 1968.
