Postcard Chrome Tlaquepaque Mexico Pottery Painters Jalisco Vistacolor V1131

Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, Mexico1960ChromeExcellent

Two artisans crouch on a brick floor amid towering earthenware jars, their brushes dancing across the sun-baked clay in a workshop in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco — one of Mexico's most celebrated craft villages. The man on the left, straw sombrero pushed back on his head, holds a small painted bowl inches from his face, scrutinizing every stroke; beside him a large olla bears freshly applied green and red palm motifs. Tlaquepaque, on the outskirts of Guadalajara, rose to fame in the mid-20th century as tourists flooded in for hand-painted pottery, blown glass, and papier-mâché, and this chrome-era card captures the pride of that cottage industry at its peak. The Vistacolor imprint was distributed by Impresos Permacolor, Guadalajara, a prolific regional publisher whose cards are sought by both Mexico topographic and folk-craft collectors.
