Antique & Vintage Postcards

A winding sandy path cuts between rounded dark-green dune hedges toward the elegantly proportioned Chalet Royal perched on the bluff above a crowded Ostende beach — bathers and promenaders dot the pale strand stretching to the horizon, with the grand casino complex visible in the misty distance — in this evocative early-century seaside scene that captures King Leopold II's favorite Belgian resort at its Edwardian peak. The Chalet Royal served as an informal royal beach pavilion for the Belgian royal family, and its appearance on a postcard signals both its architectural importance and the pride Ostende locals took in their royal associations. Published by Le Bon of Ostende as number 16 in his extensive series, the card's undivided back bears the classic Belgian bilingual "CARTE POSTALE / POSTKAART" convention with address space only — never written upon, never mailed, and beautifully preserved with excellent tonal range in the halftone image. The companion to card PC-01217 from the same Le Bon series, this example is slightly sharper in print quality.
