Antique & Vintage Postcards

A laden donkey waits patiently at the foot of Clovelly's impossibly steep, cobblestoned High Street while two figures — a woman in white apron and a man with a walking stick — pause outside the ivy-clad New Inn, surrounded by cascading pink roses and lush green foliage tumbling over ancient whitewashed cottage walls. This hand-tinted photographic art card of Devon's most-painted fishing village was rendered by Stanley F. Hughes, whose distinctive soft-wash colorization technique gave Clovelly postcards their dreamy, watercolour quality that made them among the most popular British scenic cards of the Edwardian era. Unposted, never written on, preserved in fine condition with only very minor age toning.
