Postcard 1930s Greetings California Box of Oranges Linen Longshaw Unused

California, USA1938LinenExcellent

Bursting with the exuberant optimism of California boosterism, this vivid linen-era postcard presents an overflowing wooden crate of navel oranges — blossoms and glossy leaves tucked between the fruit — against a cerulean sky, the crate's side bearing the cheerful promise: "The Box of Oranges I Promised You from California." Manufactured by the Longshaw Card Co. of Los Angeles, the card's reverse proudly notes that "California's famous orange industry produced forty-six million boxes of this golden fruit last year," and identifies the large Navel orange as "a native of California, prized the world over for its fine flavor." The linen texture, vivid lithographic color, and "Place One Cent Stamp Here" box on the reverse date this card to the mid-to-late 1930s, when linen cards dominated the American souvenir market and California citrus was at its commercial peak before suburbanization consumed the groves. Card number 844 in Longshaw's series; unused, clean, bright.
