Postcard 1902 Gt. Yarmouth The Market Horse Carts Empire Series UK

Great Yarmouth, England, UK1902Pre-linenFair-Good

Horse-drawn carts jostle for space amid canvas-covered stalls as Edwardian shoppers — women in long skirts and men in flat caps — pick through heaps of produce at Great Yarmouth's bustling open-air market, its handsome Victorian red-brick facades glowing in a hand-tinted palette of amber, rose, and sage green. Great Yarmouth, a prosperous Norfolk port and seaside resort, hosted one of England's oldest chartered markets; this colorized view captures the square at the height of its commercial life, when horses still outnumbered motorcars and market day was the social anchor of the week. The Empire Series card is an "undivided back" format, placing this squarely in the 1901–1902 transitional window before the divided back became standard in Britain in 1902, making it a particularly early example of the genre. The pencilled dealer notation "4-300" on the reverse suggests it passed through a collection or trade lot, and the card retains vivid color despite edge wear.
