Postcard 1904 Shakespeare's Birthplace Stratford-on-Avon UK Raphael Tuck Sent USA

Stratford-on-Avon, England, UK1904Pre-linenFair-Good

Sent by a collector named W. on a crisp February morning in 1904 from Doncaster, England, to a Philadelphia address, this vivid Raphael Tuck "View" series card depicts Shakespeare's half-timbered birthplace in Stratford-on-Avon bathed in warm terracotta tones — the richly rendered Tudor façade as instantly recognizable then as it is today. The message, squeezed into the undivided front margin, reads with charming Edwardian formality: "Dear Sir, I am sending you one at Stratford. Are there any kind of cards that you require? If so I will send you them if you like." — a snapshot of the nascent postcard-trading network that was sweeping both sides of the Atlantic. The card traveled from Doncaster (postmarked 9 Feb 1904) to West Philadelphia Station, arriving 20 Feb 1904, and bears a King Edward VII one-penny red stamp in excellent condition.
