Antique & Vintage Postcards

Tall, cathedral-like pitch pines line a soft sandy path at Lakewood, New Jersey, in this moody blue-toned vignette — a resort town that at the turn of the century rivalled Newport as a winter playground for New York's elite, including the Rockefellers and Goulds. The undivided-back format and "Private Mailing Card / Authorized by Act of Congress of May 19, 1898" legend date this precisely to the PMC era. A woman named Gertrude writes simply to Miss Edna of Pope Mills, New York: "How are you after last week? I expect to go back Saturday. I hope you are well. Come down — Gertrude." The 1-cent Franklin stamp, postmarked April 5, 1908 from what appears to be Downington (Downingtown), PA, is a collector-pleasing detail on an already charming small-town nature card.
