Postcard 1908 Bonn Rheinbrücke Rhine Bridge Brückenweibchen Männchen Germany Used

Bonn, Germany1908Pre-linenGood

A hand-colored Edwardian postcard presents Bonn's first permanent Rhine crossing — the Rheinbrücke (also known as the Alte Rheinbrücke or Südbrücke) — in its full neo-Romanesque glory, its distinctive twin-towered gatehouse and graceful iron arch spanning the wide river. Flanking the main view are two oval medallion portraits of the bridge's beloved folkloric mascots: the Brückenweibchen (bridge woman), a grimacing female bronze face, and the Brückenm ännchen (bridge man), a bearded male face leaning on his hands — both actual bronze reliefs affixed to the bridge that became popular good-luck charms for river travelers. The card was posted from Bonn on 17 August 1908 with a 5-Pfennig German Reich stamp, addressed to Else Krause in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland) at Hasselbrookstraße, with a friendly message signed by Berthold from Langenau wishing greetings from Bonn. Publisher: Ottmar Zieher, Munich — one of Germany's premier postcard chromolithographers of the era.
