Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bathed in the warm amber glow of a Bavarian sunset, the Propyläen — Leo von Klenze's monumental Greek Revival gateway anchoring the western end of Munich's Königsplatz — commands the scene in this elegant chromolithographic art card published by Kunstverlag J. Velten, Karlsruhe and illustrated by the artist Kley. Built between 1846 and 1862 as a ceremonial entrance to the arts precinct commissioned by King Ludwig I, the Propyläen was already an iconic Munich landmark when this card was produced around 1903. The warm palette and soft atmospheric rendering are hallmarks of Velten's prestigious Künstlerpostkarte (artist postcard) series, which are among the most sought-after of the Wilhelmine era. The card was used — a 5 Pfennig Bayern stamp (green) is affixed and cancelled at München, with a transit mark, and the message is addressed to Fräulein Marie in Graz, Steiermark. The handwritten note, dated 24/11 03, conveys friendly greetings from Munich.
