The linen texture and saturated color palette are hallmarks of the Curt Teich Art-Colortone process, registered with the U.S. Patent Office, and the card number S-433 / 6A-H444 dates manufacture to approximately 1936. These "Happy South" cards are among the most heavily scrutinized examples of racial caricature in American ephemera: they were produced in bulk for gift shops throughout the Jim Crow South, presenting a romanticized and demeaning vision of Black Southern life for white tourist consumption. Today they are collected both as artifacts of graphic history and as documentation of systemic racism in popular visual culture.
