Antique & Vintage Postcards

Rare and jubilant, this 1919 allegorical postcard captures the euphoric camaraderie of the Allied victory — two heraldic lions, one wearing a Belgian kepi before the black-yellow-red tricolor, the other in a French military cap before the blue-white-red tricolor, clink foaming beer steins in a triumphant toast. The French text "Trinquons! Nous sommes d'accord" ("Let's drink! We are agreed") crowns the scene, while the Dutch/Flemish footer "Weer Goede Vrienden!" ("Good friends again!") speaks to the post-war Belgian-French rapprochement and the particular significance of Belgian liberation. Dated "Anno 1919," this is a vivid piece of post-WWI propaganda art — celebratory, bilingual, and suffused with the relief of armistice. The reverse bears the printed advertising of Restaurant "De Kroon," N.Z. Voorburgwal 115, Amsterdam, with a full Dutch-language menu — an extraordinary dual-use card combining Allied victory art with Amsterdam restaurant advertising, printed by W. den Boer, Bussum. The card appears unused.
