Antique & Vintage Postcards

Hauntingly atmospheric, this early undivided-back postcard peers into the ancient interior of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius in Spalato (Split, modern-day Croatia) — the Roman mausoleum of Emperor Diocletian repurposed as a Christian cathedral, here showing its soaring granite columns with Corinthian capitals, a massive hanging chandelier, carved Gothic canopy pulpit, and altar receding into the dimly lit apse. Published by G.A. Milisich of Spalato when the city was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the card's trilingual reverse — "Correspondenz-Karte / Dopisnica / Cartolina di corrispondenza" in German, Croatian, and Italian — perfectly encapsulates the layered imperial identities of Dalmatia at the turn of the twentieth century. The card is unused, with a pristine undivided back bearing card number 80240.
