Dark water mirrors the massive granite arch of the High Bridge at Barton, Vermont — a railroad culvert of almost Roman solemnity, its cut-stone voussoirs framing a perfectly circular tunnel mouth where the river disappears beneath the tracks in cool shadow, willows and birches pressing close on either bank. This richly colorized card by the Hugh C. Leighton Co. of Portland, Maine (printed in Germany, no. 92N) captures the quiet industrial poetry of rural Vermont infrastructure in the early twentieth century, when such engineering works inspired genuine civic pride. The card was addressed to "Miss Lena West" in Randolph, Vermont (c/o "Mrs. L. Finland") and carries a densely written message — the sender describes visiting, mentions a "golden card," and references local Vermont people and places with easy familiarity. A 1¢ Franklin stamp is affixed, postmarked (partial) with what appears to be a Vermont CDS.
